Content explores the concepts of mental wellness and mental illness within a holistic framework, and the impact of cultural and social influences on mental health, mental illness, and substance misuse disorders.

The therapeutic role of the nurse in assessing and caring for individuals with these conditions across a range of nursing contexts is examined and the legal and policy framework related to mental health and substance misuse disorder nursing is introduced.

Common pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches are examined and Mental Health First Aid certification is also undertaken.

The clinical practice placement provides opportunities to demonstrate application of theory in practice.
