This unit is split into three modules.
Module one sets the scene for an understanding of special education and begins with the basic concepts of intelligence and disability. This is followed by an examination of the historical, social and legislative forces that led to the way that students with disabilities are educated in Australian schools today. The jargon that is part of the special education scene is also addressed.
Module two examines educational approaches used within an inclusive approach such as curriculum adaptation, as well as differentiation and individualisation, within a transdisciplinary mode.
Module three considers the practical aspects of teaching students with disabilities and strategies to meet social emotional needs, physical needs, educational needs and behavioural needs are examined.
